Europe

The post-World War II history of modern Europe – continental birthplace of Western civilization – centers on the slow, steady evolution of intergovernmental cooperation and supranational institutions that emerge today as the European Union (EU), currently in its 20th year and comprised of 27 member states with others waiting to join.  With combined population of 500 million people, just over 7% of the global total, the EU produces 20% of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP).

The underlying force that drives the EU is a quest for trans-border openness with a single-market for movement of goods, services, people and money.  The trade-inducing consequence of this trend is clear, but so are challenges that arise from transnational crime, terrorism and illegal immigration.  Within the EU, 17 member states comprise the “Eurozone”, utilizing the euro as a single currency.  Tensions have grown among this group of nations fueled by inequity between struggling national economies of some southern European members facing the Mediterranean and stronger economic conditions to the north.

Nevertheless, the worldwide economy depends heavily upon strong European performance and today’s global enterprises must operate within this dynamic arena and its various languages, cultures, laws and conflicting priorities.  To do so requires efficient and effective capability in addressing security concerns, investigative capability, and protection of intellectual property and competitive intelligence.
