Smoke Alarm Safety

From kitchen accidents to forgotten appliances, unattended candles, and burning cigarettes, there are potential hazards in every home that could lead to fire. Smoke alarms are your best defense.

Smoke Alarm Safety

There are two types of smoke alarms:

  1. Ionization alarms detect flaming fires.

  2. Photoelectric alarms detect smoldering fires.

Both can be found at your local hardware store, and experts recommend that you have at least one of each installed in your home. Make sure your warning devices are properly installed and functional, and sleep soundly knowing that your household is protected.

  • Install a smoke alarm in every bedroom of your house and at least one on every level of your home, including the basement.
  • Use photoelectric smoke alarms in your kitchen. Photoelectric alarms are less sensitive to the small smoke particles generated by controlled cooking fires.
  • If you or someone living in your house is deaf, install a smoke alarm that uses strobe lights in addition to noise to indicate the presence of a fire.
  • Interconnect your smoke alarms so that when one sounds, they all do.
  • Test all smoke alarms in your home monthly by holding down the test button and waiting for the alarm to sound before pressing the button again to stop it.
  • If your smoke alarm emits a loud chirping sound, the batteries are low and should be replaced immediately.
  • Replace smoke alarm batteries once a year, and replace smoke alarm units entirely every ten years.
  • If your smoke alarm does sound, everyone should leave the house immediately. Move a safe distance from your home before calling your fire department.
