Power Tool Safety

Accidents happen and mistakes are made, but when it involves power tools there is no “do-over” and even the smallest accident can have catastrophic effects. Precaution is top priority when operating power tools. So before you begin your next project involving your favorite power tool read our tips to keep safety paramount and avoid serious injury.

  • Always read the manual and the instructions. Note the manufacturer’s operating recommendations for the tool you are using.
  • Wear appropriate protection gear: safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields, a dust mask and hearing protection. With some tools, a face shield may be recommended.
  • Dress appropriately.
    • Avoid wearing anything that could get caught in the machinery, such as loose fitting clothing, neckties or jewelry.
    • Long hair should be tied back
    • Non-slip shoes are ideal.
  • Keep your work area neat and clear. You don’t want anything getting in the way, getting ruined or creating a serious problem.
  • Use proper ventilation for sanding and woodcutting projects.
  • Don’t use power tools in the proximity of flammable vapors.
  • Never use power tools if under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Never use power tools if you’re sick, tired or distracted. This could lead to injury.
  • Make sure your work area is well-lit.
  • Make sure the power switch is turned to the off position before plugging in any power tool.
  • Before you make any changes or add/remove accessories, make sure the tool is completely turned off and unplugged.
  • Never use power tools in wet or damp conditions. This could cause the tools to malfunction.
  • Never use a damaged or malfunctioning tool.
  • Never overreach when using a power tool. Keep both feet on the floor.
  • Don’t use a tool with warped or dull blades.
  • Use the right tool for the right job.
  • Take care of your power tools. Always unplug, clean and store in a secure, dry place and out of reach of the curious hands of children.
