Keeping Your College Student Safe - Campus Security Checklist

Most parents list safety as a top concern for their children attending college. Rural and self-contained colleges and universities are statistically rather benign places in terms of crime, but there is still plenty of trouble out there — from petty theft to date rape drugs and other instances of violence.

It's a whole different scene, though, if your child is going to school in a large metropolitan city. Keeping students safe and secure is more challenging for the institution and requires a greater degree of vigilance and street smarts from the student.

Colleges typically provide freshmen orientation that includes thorough briefings on everything from nighttime security procedures to keeping dorm rooms locked and avoiding walks home from the library at 1 a.m. Here are a few more tips for students starting their college careers. Campus Security Checklist

General Awareness

  • Know your surroundings and trust your instincts.
  • Put  campus  security's  phone  number  in  your  cell;  set  for speed dial.
  • Do not accept drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) from others — remember that alcohol is the #1 date-rape drug. Keep an eye on your drink at all times or cover your drink with your hand — if you lose sight of it, throw it away and get a new one.
  • Let someone know where you're going and when you plan to be back.
  • Never walk alone in isolated areas; always go with friends.
  • Don't post personal information on social networking sites.
  • Use assertive body language.

Around Campus

  • Be aware of your surroundings; avoid wearing headphones.
  • Avoid working or studying alone in a building, especially at night.
  • Identify locations of emergency call boxes.
  • Arrange for an escort or shuttle instead of walking back to your dorm alone late at night.
  • Stay on a well-lit, "beaten" path; avoid poorly lit areas.
  • Report suspicious behavior to university security staff.
  • Use your ATM card during daylight hours and be aware of area surrounding ATM.
  • Know building and office hours.

Dorm Life

  • Carry your car/room keys when approaching your car/room, so you can unlock your door and enter quickly.
  • Lock up your valuables (jewelry, cell phones, iPods, stamps, cash, checkbooks); small safes are commonly available for purchase.
  • Know where the fire exits are; take fire drills seriously.
  • Lock your door to your room and adjoining bathroom, if you have one, and window(s).
  • Don't lend your room key out.
  • Register your laptop and valuables with campus security.
  • Let your Resident Advisor (RA) know if something seems out of the ordinary.
