ATLANTA – May 27, 2015 – Private security officers are often the first to respond when lives and property are at risk. In some cases, appropriately trained and experienced officers can aid in situations and eliminate the need for additional emergency services. This was the case in a recent incident in Savannah, Georgia when U.S. Security Associates (USA) Security Officer Harry Newbill responded quickly to aid a grocery store customer during a medical emergency.
While on patrol at a local grocery store, Officer Harry Newbill witnessed a woman become disoriented and collapse. He quickly responded, and using his training and personal experience, he recognized the signs of a diabetic incident (commonly the result of a drop in blood sugar). After offering to call for emergency medical personnel, Officer Newbill got a soda to help raise the woman’s blood sugar. He stayed with the woman to ensure her responsiveness and alertness continued to improve, indicating that her blood sugar levels were returning to normal. After recovering, Officer Newbill helped the woman into the car with her shopping bags.
As the first to respond when incidents occur, security officers must be prepared to perform essential safety functions, including providing observation, reporting, enforcement, and medical assistance until public responders arrive. USA, a national security company with over 50,000 employees, implements selective hiring policies and comprehensive learning and development programs to ensure that the security company provides a skilled, well-trained private security force.
Although private security industry training requirements are not federally regulated and vary by state, USA provides a comprehensive training program for every security officer at every client site. Training includes mandatory pre-assignment training and ongoing, continued education that is often customized for specific client sites.
Michael Ellis, USA Operations Manager (Savannah branch), stated, “Our officers must complete a minimum of 8 hours of pre-assignment training, which includes emergency response and basic medical guidelines. I commend Officer Newbill on his exemplary performance and personal attention in this situation. It is testament that we are hiring the right people and training them well.”
