Cargo thefts in the United States are at an all-time high. According to a recent study, 951 cargo thefts were recorded in 2013. That’s an average of 2.6 incidents per day, 79.25 incidents per month.
Food/drink thefts topped the list of most stolen products for the fourth year in a row, accounting for 27% of cargo thefts in 2013. Electronics were the second most targeted product type, and home/garden products and metals tied for third place. Other stolen product types in 2013 included building/industrial materials, clothing/shoes, auto parts, alcohol/tobacco, pharmaceuticals, and personal care items.
Thefts of pharmaceutical products increased by 50% in 2013, and food/drink product thefts escalated by 38% over the same period. Driver theft grew by 389% in 2012 and by another 76% in 2013.
With increasingly organized and sophisticated cargo theft rings and relatively mild criminal penalties, the number of cargo theft incidents is likely to continue to climb, and the potential for loss is substantial. In 2013, the average loss value per incident across all product types was $171,146, while the largest single incident loss was $12.5 million, a full truckload of smartphones stolen in Gary, Indiana.
U.S. Security Associates partners with logistics and transportation firms to guard the supply chain against theft of product through site-security measures at warehouses and distribution centers, and through the most effective over-the-road cargo escort program in the nation. Not only do cargo theft threats represent significant possible dollar loss of the value of a single load of product, but there is also the risk of potential supply chain compromise of entire production runs. Modern GPS technology provides excellent tools for tracking progress of loads in the system and for locating stolen product after the fact, but no technical device can equal the deterrent effect of a trained and dedicated escort team.
To deter potential loss, USA deploys experienced professionals to assure security of sensitive shipments from departure to safe arrival. We have the equipment and procedure in place to provide tracking mechanisms for all vehicles we escort. Photo-documentation and trip logs record loading and unloading, trailer seal integrity, and suspicious or unusual incidents en route. Our cargo escort professionals remain in constant contact with dispatch centers, reporting progress and every stop along the way, however brief.
Our experts monitor national trends and know where and when cargo is at greatest risk. In 2013, 64.88% of cargo thefts took place in five states: California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Illinois. Busy seaports, intersections of major interstate highways, and the presence of large organized cargo theft rings make these states hotspots for cargo theft crime. New Jersey, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana, and Pennsylvania also consistently rank among the states with the most threat incidents.
In 2013, 55% of trailer thefts and 58% of facility thefts took place on Saturday or Sunday, and 73% of all thefts were against trailers and containers that were stationary and unattended. Because cargo is at the greatest risk when it’s at rest — during extended stops and especially overnight — USA customarily deploys two-person teams in both truck and escort vehicle to travel coast-to-coast without delay. Most importantly, not a single moment passes during the entire process without protective surveillance.
